Treasures of eBay: USWNT Signed Baseball

Jason Davis, September 14, 2011

Treasures of eBay is a daily feature where we wade through the mountains of bollocks on eBay to bring you an auction we think is worth a second look.

Today’s treasure is a baseball signed by the 2010 USWNT with a starting price of $159.99.

Why is there a baseball signed by the USWNT on eBay? I imagine it went down like this:

Hey! Isn’t that the US Women’s National Team’s charter bus? I think it is! It would be really cool to get their autographs, I really like that Hope Solo and Abby Wambach, they’re great! Crap! I don’t have anything for them to sign! What do I do? Well, I do have this baseball that I carry with me everywhere. You never know when a baseball might come in handy. Maybe I should just have a bunch of soccer players sign the baseball! That would be hilarious! And then I’ll put it up on eBay for $150! Yeah!

And…scene. Actually, that’s exactly how it happened, and we know this because the guy selling the ball has a YouTube video of him getting the autographs. He and his buddies – one of whom was smart enough to bring a SOCCER BALL (you know, the ball for the sport that the USWNT play) – were on the street in whichever city the USWNT were in May of 2010 ready to score with John Hancocks from Pia, Hope, Abby, Alex and the gang. Pia seems amused.

The seller calls this item “rare.” I should think so, considering most soccer fans aren’t dense enough to think having a soccer team sign a baseball is a good idea. But I suppose if you love the USWNT, baseball and really dumb irony, this is the item for you.
