Spanish Reports Say David Beckham and Alexi Lalas Are Buying Malaga

Jason Davis, September 11, 2012

We’re not big on rumors around here, mostly because their rarely true and hardly entertaining, but we have to make an exception in the case of this amazing rumor that world football/fashion/tattoo/hairstyle icon David Beckham and former Galaxy president/former US international/current ESPN broadcaster/leader of the ginger resistance Alexi Lalas are interested in buying a bulk of the shares in troubled Spanish club Malaga. It’s the most amazing rumor ever.

Neither Beckham nor Lalas have commented on the rumor, and though the Spanish outlet El Mundo says the information originated with the LA Times, we can’t find any such story online. I’m refusing to believe that means the story is a load of poppycock.

Random quotation marks for the win.

According to a report, David Beckham is set to acquire a controlling interest of La Liga club Malaga, according to Marta Abarrio of EL MUNDO. The bad economic situation that the club is facing, which has forced them to sell the majority of its best players, has forced Owner Sheikh Abdullah Al-Thani to “put his shares on the market.” The former England captain “could acquire” 75% of the Spanish club in association with former L.A. Galaxy President Alexi Lalas. In return, Al-Thani will receive shares owned by the two “in companies and clubs with Middle Eastern origins.” Malaga VP Moayad Shatat said that “he had not heard of such operation”.
