Brazil is known for many things, but perhaps the most well known are the quality of their soccer and the beauty of their women. Since Hope Solo can play a little and isn’t bad to look at, she struck a cord in the land of Samba.
Solo became the number one trending topic in Brazil on Sunday during the USA-Brazil Women’s World Cup semifinal. That’s not too surprising, really, considering she saved a penalty in regulation only to have the referee order it retaken, as well as one in the shootout (which gave the US the win, essentially). But Solo didn’t trend because she’s a great goalkeeper…not just that, anyway.
A Journo do Brasil story helps explain some of this odd reaction to the American win, again with reference to Hope Solo’s physical appearance. “The United States goalkeeper, Hope Solo, was definitely one of the reasons for the Brazilian team’s departure from the Women’s World Cup,” asserts the story. “Still, Solo charmed everyone on Twitter, not so much for her talent in goal, but mainly for her beauty. Even the Brazilians could not get angry with the goalie and put the # hashtag goleiraEUAlinda [beautiful American goalie] on #1 Trending Topics in Brazil.”
Solo is now the object of infatuation in two different countries, and has managed to make Brazilian fans feel better about losing. That’s amazing, and indicates that Solo may have some superpower our scientists should be attempting to harness. If we can engineer an entire team of Hope Solos, our opponents will probably find themselves unable to play when mesmerized by her beauty. American teams will be invincible.
Someone get on that.
