David Beckham Turned Down A Cherry Deal From An 8th Tier Norwegian Side To Join PSG

Jason Davis, February 1, 2013

I know what you’re thinking: David Beckham to PSG was a no-brainer. PSG gets the world’s most famous footballer, Becks gets to add some Parisian chic to his brand, a Paris children’s charity gets David’s multi-million euro salary, and Posh gets to hang out in Paris and pretend she’s fashion elite. But Becks did have other offers, or so he claims, and perhaps one or two were as good as what Paris Saint Germain put on the table. Like the one from Norwegian eighth-division club Ørn Kristiania.

The club sent a lovely letter to Creative Arts, Beckham’s reps in LA, laying out their offer.

That sports bag is awfully tempting, and the 2500 kroner members fee (about $450) seems like a great deal. David spends more than that on lattes in a given month. And they’re making an exception to their usual homegrown rule to let him play. What an honor.

These guys could have been Beckham’s teammates. I hear they’ve got a center forward whose first touch is sometimes not terrible.

Alas, Golden Balls ultimately opted for the glitzy glamour of France’s richest team over the humble satisfaction of Norwegian amateur soccer. I can’t help but think he made the wrong choice (I mean, seriously – how many minutes will he actually get for PSG)?

If Ørn Kristiania is still in the market, I’m available. I don’t have Beckham’s dead ball ability or worldwide fame, but I am pretty good at arguing with referees and being slow. And I could really use a new sports bag.
