Cristiano Ronaldo Is Great, But Did He Inspire A Typeface? Because Lionel Messi Did

Jason Davis, November 1, 2012

I’m currently knee-deep in a kick to find player-inspired art of various kinds beyond the usual (but wonderful) illustrated fare that’s so prevalent on the internet. A little while back, it was music, when I highlighted a collection of songs about Pele, Maradona, and others. Today, it’s typography. As in a typeface. Yes, there’s a player-inspired font. It probably doesn’t surprise you to know that the player in question is Lionel Andres Messi.

The typeface, called “Fenómeno”*, is the work of Syahrul Salleh, who describes it as “bold with bladelike and fluid features just like the way phenomenal footballer Lionel Messi dribbles through the hapless defense, like knife through butter.”

Sounds about right.

*Yep, forgot to note the odd choice of name for a Messi-inspired font. Obviously people most associate “Fenómeno” with Original Ronaldo.
