More #NYCFC Design: Dan O’Connor’s City Blue Logos And Shirts

Fresh into the KCKRS inbox is this effort from reader Dan O’Connor for New York City FC’s look. Dan makes heavy use of Man City’s sky blue, and includes the three diagonal stripes from City’s badge in both of his NYCFC designs (and frankly, it’s the most innocuous of the elements in City’s badge). Dan’s shirts aren’t terrible, but both the first and second look too much like Sporting Kansas City designs. The third, though, with pinstripes and sky blue is pretty good. More »

Mark Willis’s Unique Take On #NYCFC Branding

A few things needed saying before we discuss Mark Willis’s unique take on the logo for the newly announced MLS expansion franchise set to start play in New York in 2015 (Don’t know Mark Willis? He’s the guy behind the brilliant baseball/soccer crossover designs): 1. This post will in no way do Mark’s design justice because it doesn’t include his process, which is awesome and totally worth reading, and 2. He fully admits that it’s a direction the team will never take. Now that those things are out of the way, we can begin to talk about how awesome this is. More »

adidas Unveils Lightest Shoe Ever And Sensor-Packed Smart Ball

At just 99 grams, the new, as of yet unnamed, adidas adizero miCoach Elite-enabled shoe unveiled in London this week is so light that the football shoe giant chose the display it in a fairly impressive fashion: floating on a platform held aloft by a magnet. In addition to the lightness of the shoe and the technology embedded in it, adidas also presented a sensor-laded “smart ball”, complete with dedicate app so players can track their progress in all kinds of fancy stat-happy ways. Ronaldinho Chose Sneakers Over Cleats For Copa Lib Match On Artificial Turf

In the first leg of their Copa Libertadores quarterfinal series against Club Tijuana at Estadio Caliente last night, Ronaldinho’s Atletico Mineiro escaped with a comeback 2-2 draw. Ronaldinho himself started and played 90 minutes on Estadio Caliente’s artificial surface, though he didn’t make much of a mark. Perhaps that’s because the Brazilian star eschewed the traditional footwear, replete with studs, for a pair of tennis shoes*. Or, if you prefer, sneakers. Bright orange sneakers, to be precise. Here’s An #NYCFC Badge Design That Is Very Man City

After our call for more New York City Football Club-inspired designs yesterday–since we don’t know what the club’s logo and colors will be–we received this from @spandlegax on Twitter*. It borrows several elements from Man City’s badge, and if we’re reading this properly, does a pretty good job of using New York imagery in the place of Manchester imagery while still resembling City’s badge. Let’s begin. More »

Colombian Icons Of Football And Hair, By Leonardo Ocampo

Italia ’90 was the height of Colombia’s generation of football men with fantastic hair. Carlos Valderrama sprayed passes from midfield with his explosion of golden curls. Rene Higuita prowled his goal with a glorious set of flowing locks. Leonel Alvarez punished the opposition with his patented jheri curl. Colombian illustrator Leonardo Ocampo reminds us of those glory days of Colombian hair with a trio of Italia ’90-inspired trading card designs. More »

New York City FC Prompts Designers Everywhere To Design

When Major League Soccer announced that a partnership between Manchester City and the New York Yankees would launch the league’s 20th team, they did so without providing any of the club’s image. All that was released was a name, “New York City FC”, sans badge/crest/logo, colors, or kits. Naturally, the internet lit up with proposed designs for these elements. Here are a couple of examples. Muangthong United’s Mario Djurovski Goes For The ‘Shorts On Head’ Celebration, Gets Sent Off

Here’s Muangthong United midfielder Mario Djurovski scoring, contemplating, then removing his shorts and wearing them on his head like a hat as he celebrates. For his effort, he received a second yellow card and a dismissal. Not a good look, really, though it does prompt the question of what he might have done to receive the first yellow. Something less revealing, probably. More »

FC Dallas’s Michel Hits An Olimpico, From Every Angle

Nice little video here, of FC Dallas’s Michel scoring an Olimpico in his side’s 4-2 loss to Seattle over the weekend, from every possible angle. Occasionally, Olimpicos rest squarely on the shoulders of the goalkeeper. In this case, Michael Gspurning gets a bit of a screen from FCD striker Kenney Cooper but is otherwise faultless. It’s just a lovely goal from one of the league’s 2013 revelations. Nice work from the FC Dallas video people. More »

The Only Thing Worse Than This Goalkeeper’s Luck Is This Announcer

Via Deadspin comes this video of the 4A soccer state championship final from the great state of South Carolina between Irmo and Lexington. With the game tied after two extra time periods, the game went to penalties. With penalties tied 3-3, Irmo captain MATTISON GOSSETT (sorry, I’m still hearing it that way in my head) stepped up to take the potential winning kick. Poor keeper Jacob Parton guessed right, got his hands to the ball, and was set to celebrate, only to have some wicked spin trickle the ball over the line for the winner. More »
